Hello, Herman here, nice to meet you.

smalltype is a quiet place to write notes in markdown. I make it on my own, and I wanted it to work without knowing anything about you. Here’s what happens to your notes.

Nothing is collected. No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no tracking. I don’t know who you are, and I never see what you write.

Your notes are files. Every note is a real .md text file, either on your iPhone or in your own iCloud Drive. You can open, copy, or back it up in the Files app whenever you like, with or without smalltype.

There’s no server. I don’t run one, so there’s nowhere for your notes to go and nothing of yours for me to keep.

iCloud is Apple’s. If you keep your notes in iCloud Drive, Apple syncs and stores them under your Apple Account, covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy. It’s your iCloud, not mine. Text notes are small, so iCloud’s free tier is plenty.

Other apps can read your notes. They’re ordinary documents, so any app you give access to your files can open them. That comes with keeping your notes instead of renting them from somebody’s cloud.

Deleted notes go to Recently Deleted. Same as any other file, so a mistake isn’t final.

Deleting the app deletes its notes. Anything kept On My iPhone lives inside smalltype and leaves when smalltype does. If you’re removing the app and want to keep your notes, move them out through the Files app first, or use Offload App instead of Delete App. Notes in iCloud Drive stay where they are.

There’s nothing to pay for. No ads, no subscription, no in-app purchases, and no data quietly funding any of it.
